FADN to FDMS (November 10th, 2008)  Durban, South Africa to Manzini, Swaziland

Short flight up to Manzini, Swaziland.  Decided to fire up the CRJ-700...hadn't flown that one in a while.  I'm sure I'm rusty again.

Who let the Britt's in the house?  Pushing back and taxiing out to runway.

Nice looking landscape...pointing the nose down for landing.

Somewhere there is an airport around here...not quite sure where at the moment.  What's that ATC...bank right.  Oh crap another elevated psuedo airport....great score is not coming.

Looking good...tire screaching...bringer home Smitty.

Landing Score:32.34  (God I hate the shift-z and the z key for autopilot....!$!$#!@$#!)
Autopilot used.

Landing included the following problems:

  • Poor glideslope on ILS approach - you can do better.
  • Glideslope lost before you touched down - not your best effort.
  • Touch down not aligned with the runway - let's point down the runway.
  • Poor steering after landing - stay on the centre line.

Definite room for improvement...

Flight Score:84.92
Autopilot used.

Flight included the following problems:

  • Rapid descent - dangerous and uncomfortable.
  • Narrowly missed obstacles - plan your safety altitudes.

FDMS to FAJS (November 11th, 2008)  Manzini, Swaziland to Johannesburg, South Africa.

Heading inland to Jan Smuts International airport and the large city of Johannesburg.  Short flight so we'll see how we did.

A couple of small private planes.  Neat looking lake off to the left.

Now take a look at this.  City coming into view nice and sunny.  More buildings...lining up nicely.  Then we have the famous FSX weather....sheez

Where in the hell did this come from....crap!  Long taxi from runway.

Lots of South African Airbus 340's.  And check this out...an old 727 from Nationwide Airlines....

Visibility: 2.49 Miles     Wind: 7 Knots
Landing Score:131.05      (I'll take that score....thank you very little.)

Landing included the following problems:

  • Poor glideslope on ILS approach - you can do better.

Flight Score:136.20

Flight included the following problems:

  • Rapid descent - dangerous and uncomfortable.
  • Poorly trimmed aircraft - trimmers are there to help: use them.

FAJS to FAWB (November 11th, 2008)  Johannesburg, South Africa to Pretoria, South Africa.

Extremely short flight of 27nm from the international airport to Pretoria...so I decided to take up another new plane, a low and slow Cessna 172.

Can't really tell, but a cool looking building ahead...nothing but huge A340's at the gates.

Oh wait, what's this.  More ground fog?  Wait...wait...there it's all gone again in the matter of minutes...sheez.

Nice looking landscape and interesting buildings below.

All lined up...flaps down....a Non-ILS landing...let's go to the numbers Mr. Smith.

Landing Score:51.29
Distance from runway numbers (visual approach): 278 feet

Landing included the following problems:

  • Poor glideslope on visual approach - you can do better.
  • Poor steering after landing - stay on the centre line.

Flight Score:95.47   (Hope nobody saw Mr. Smith mooning the crowd at my low altitude?)

Flight included the following problems:

  • Excessive speed at low altitude - several complaints have been filed.

FAWB to FQMA (November 12th, 2008)  Pretoria, South Africa to Maputo, Mazambique

Heading back to the East coast where head over to Madagascar.  Looks like another good day to fly.

Passing a couple small private planes.  Neat looking lake again.

Looking out the window.  Pretty mixture of land and water.

Getting close to the ocean....bright blue waters.  Man, I am lined up good.  Come on Smitty...give me a good number.

Landing Score:132.90

Glideslope lost before you touched down - not your best effort.

Flight Score:130.42

Flight included the following problems:

  • Rapid descent - dangerous and uncomfortable.
  • Narrowly missed tail strike - watch your pitch: this could have been bad.
  • Nose held too low - we're not in combat.
  • Poorly trimmed aircraft - trimmers are there to help: use them.

FQMA to FMMI (November 14th, 2008) Maputo, Mazambique to Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Ok folks, here's the deal.  I have a problem with my computer right now that I cannot seem to make a flight longer than 2 hours with out my computer just freezing up on me.  So all I have is some pictures of where I made it to, and nothing else to show for it.  I'm really frustrated with my system.  Nothing pisses me off more than to be about 1/2 hour out and it locks up a 2 hour flight to begin with....enjoy the pict's at least.

Late evening departure...Delta Flight 140 cleared for takeoff!

See ya South Africa.  Late evening sun.

Sun slowly going down...much prettier on my monitor, but you get the idea.

Well, and then as you can tell, my bloody freeze up problem... I'll gladly accept any ideas to help my pathetic situation.

Okay, so scoring wise....let's give me a 505.35 for landing and a 749.5252352252 for flight score.  That should put me into a huge lead now....NOT!!!!!

Joe:

I smell frustration all over your posts now. And that is just about the opposite of the keyword - fun!

I therefore propose that we put this WWT on hold until you have sortet out your problems. Or that we simply stop it right here and now. I don´t know where you are right now, but this is not an acceptable situation as I see it, so please tell me what we should do. Pause or stop - I cannot see any other solution right now. I am in Nepal and can stay there for the winter if needed, and we have no other competitors, so we can do what we want.

Talk to me.

Regards
Ole Andreasen, Denmark

Joe:

Apologies if you've mentioned this previously, but can you tell me:

1. Does your PC lock up every time when a flight lasts over 2 hours? If not - what proportion of the time?

2. When the lock up occurs, it is always while using FSFS? If so - please try a long flight without FSFS and report back. You could just set it on AP and let the thing fly by itself and then report back.

I cannot recall any previously reported instance of lock up after using FSFS for a long time and I certainly hope that this is not in anyway related to FSFS. We have thousands of sales and no reports (I think) of this.

Even if it is, there is good reason to believe, because it has not been previously reported (as far as my stressed brain can recall), that we may be able to identify a unique and unusual reason for it and solve the problem by doing things differently.

3. Any other software running on the PC except FSX and FSFS?

4. Any scheduled processes such as virus scans, Windows or other application updates, screen savers, etc?

In the words of Joe Mini World Wide Tours - "We'll get there..."

FMMI to FMNM (November 15th, 2008) Antananarivo, Madagascar to Mahajanga, Madagascar

Oh, about a 50 minute short flight to the coast of Madagascar to an non-ILS runway.  Let's see how how our Ace pilot did with this airport.

Revin' up the engines.

Talk about your wild water and land scenery...somehow I don't think it looks like this in real life, but it was funny to look at.

Kept myself a little higher than normal so I would fly low over the wild terrain...

Landing Score:74.64  ( I did not use the A/P on landing but I hit the dreaded Z key again accidently on takeoff or somewhere....)
Autopilot used.
Distance from runway numbers (visual approach): 249 feet

A splendid landing!

Flight Score:91.83
Autopilot used.

Flight included the following problems:

  • Wings not level near ground - danger of clipping a wing.

Joe my friend.

You seem to have problems with that "Z" key. Why don´t you just change the keyassignment?

Here is "key assignment change for dummies" - by Ole Andreasen

Then you should be in the clear, as of the Z key. Save you some trouble, and rise your score some.... the keys I assigned was CTRL-SHIFT-P, but there must be many many available possibilities.

BTW. I did it myself (got a reduced score caused by autopilot) - see my tour-posts for details.
