It's fun to do a water landing - you can pick a spot, create a NonILS file for it, specifying the touch down spot and the glideslope etc as usual and off you go.

You will of course need to make sure the you have some sort of land based visual cue to aim for, but it does work.

Or the choked seagull - remember that one.... Just remember to string it to a ledblock to make it stay.

I would love, if there was some keys that when you were making your NonILS r/w file for landing, you could just press some keys and it would be done for you. Manually keying in the details is time consuming ad also if you get 1 digit wrong or back to front you get a very very bad score for not aligning with the runway.

So... vis-a-vis clouds, is it possible for Smitty, et. al., to know the current ceiling level?

Or whether or not there's precip?  Or if there is - or is not - sunlight about?

(Leading questions, obviously....)

Hi -

Most things are available for insertion into Smitty's mind.

Pressure, temp, time, precip, wind, etc

What do you have in mind...?

Ideally - not something massively complex as that runs the risk of taking too many CPU clock cycles and...

...most importantly - something that has a broad application (lots of planes) and a broad appeal.

Thoughts?

I was thinking about using Smitty as a (completely optional, of course) Guide to Unsafe [Legal or otherwise] Flying.

Since I sometimes think of Smitty as a "verbal Clippy," I was thinking of something on the order of occasional conditional checks (say, once every minute or so) if a pilot's not flying an IFR plan.

The checks could trigger situational annoucements such as:

  • "The current cloud base is at [nnnn] ft."
  • "Current visibilty is below minimums at the moment."
  • "The weather outside is frightful [rain / icing / etc]."
  • "It's dark."

Which would give Mr. Smith the chance to present his Mr. Know-It-All side.

"This puts us in IFR conditions. Since you have not filed an IFR flight plan, it'd be a good idea to remedy that."

If the pilot takes corrective action - flies lower than the base, files an IFR plan, stops the rain, lights the sun, etc. - Smitty could acknowledge that.  But if the pilot's conduct continues into the realm of reckless-not-careless, Smitty could up the ante...

"If you persist in violating IFR conditions, I'll be glad to assist in shredding your pilot's certificate since you soon won't be needing it."

Of course there are many other areas to explore if Smitty can be established as IFR-aware - the pilot has filed an IFR plan, but has not received clearance; is the pilot maintaining contact with ATC; is the transponder set to VFR, etc.

And please accept Team Fenric's thanks for a wonderful product!  Over the past few weeks, my wife insists that I fly with Mr. Smith quite often; I think that's a good thing.

Hi S/L

Would it be possible for Mr Anon to announce what the QFE of your destination airfield is when you select landing mode? [Barometric pressure set on altimeter to give zero Ht at the destination airfield]

Biggles:

I see what you mean.

Sadly we cannot ask FS for the barometric pressure at any location other than where we are at that time - such data is unavailable to us.

If the FSFS pilot asked for QFE for the destination airfield but was many miles away this could lead to a very confused situation as it would be (incorrectly due to the limitations) based on local pressure.

Tricky...

Fenric:

Lots of good ideas - much appreciated!

I imagine that you, like Biggles, have considerable real world flying experience?

(Sorry if you've mentioned this before!)

There are many possibilities in what you've listed and I think we can get some of them into FSFS pretty darned soon.

I will keep everyone posted and please - keep those ideas coming.

Good to hear that FSFS is bringing sweetness and light into your home.
