Hi Guys,

Just purchased FSFS 2020 for X-Plane11. Spent all afternoon trying to get it Connected to X-Plane. FSFS crashes everytime within a couple of seconds of pressing the conect button. I note that this is not a new issues as the same issue has been raised at least twice before. Unfortunately no fix was ever posted in those threads.

I have checked all the usual things:
1. Definately running a administrator.
2. Disabled Firewalls and antivirus scanners.
3. Reinstalled FSFS.

No joy.

Any suggestions? Cheers

Martin

Hi Martin:

How are you?

I hope you are well.

Glad to help.

>> within a couple of seconds of pressing the conect button

This is almost certainly related to audio software, hardware or configuration as the connect button is followed very shortly by voice files being played.

Have you made any changes to the above, at all since, FSFlyingSchool was installed?

What occurs if you press "Listen to instructor" at the Aircraft screen of FSFlyingSchool before pressing connect?

Do you have any usual sound software, hardware or configuration on the PC?

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for replying.

I’ll check out what hardware / drivers / audio sooftware I have later this afternoon and let you know. My daughter has hijacked the PC as she is preparing for a job interview on Friday, so I’ll bide my time!

On one occasion yesterday I did get those immortal words “FS Flying School connecting”, followed immediately by FSFS crashing. On that occasion I had FSFS running before I loaded X-Plane. The audio was clear, no distortion / stuttering.

Cheers
Martin

Hi:

Thanks for the data.

From your report we know sound is possible on your PC with FSFlyingSchool, but not always.

Something has changed since the time and it played sound and the time it played no sound.

Can you please install FSFlyingSchool again into a new folder, and without making any changes to any settings inside your newly installed FSFlyingSchool program, launch it and click the "Listen to instructor" button and report the results?

Then quit it and launch XP and get into a plane and then launch FSFlyingSchool and click the connect button to start a session and report the results?

Hi Jeff,
Good news -Mr Smith is talking to me again!

Did as you suggested and everything was fine. For what it’s worth, my take on the problem was somehow related to file permissions. When I was having the problems, FSFS was installed on the C:/Users/..../Appdata/...directory and my X-Plane installation is on a separate disk, the D:/drive.

I reinstalled as per your instruction but this time put FSFS on the D:/ drive as well. As I said 3verthing was good to go. Interestingly in my haste I forgot to Run as Administrator but it did not seem to matter. I have since enabled thr Run as Administrator checkbox and everything is still good.

Just my idle thoughts on the matter. I’appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks for your help,

Keep flying

Martin

Hi Martin:

Excellent to read that you are up and running!

We're looking into different approaches (oh - a pun) regarding file permissions and indeed, this is an important factor.

It would suggest that even with run as admin, on your specific PC, with your specific configuration, there was a problem. As we can imagine, this is extremely rare, but no fun if it does occur, so we continue to explore ways to prevent it.

You've solved it! Have a great weekend of flights - and Happy Easter!
